Quote:
It was a winter's Tuesday in Civil War Texas when Josephine Wingfield Davis became the bride of William Paschal Henry, then a young Confederate soldier. The ceremony took place on the 1st day of March 1864, somewhere in Brazoria Co. on the Texas Gulf Coast.
The youngest of five children of Milton Grant and America James (Fears) Davis, Josephine was born the 10th May 1842 in Morgan Co., Georgia. Sometime after the death of her Mother in 1857, and before the 1860 Texas census, Josephine and all of her siblings and their Father joined the westward movement to Texas.
According to an entry on a photocopy of Josephine's Family Bible, William Paschal Henry was born on the 19th February 1836. It has been said that he was born in Greensborough [sic], Kentucky. The handwriting for this entry is the same as on the marriage record found in Brazoria County by Pam (Pounders) Bryan. See > HERE < for a discussion on his family.
In October of 1876, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Henry and their five surviving children arrived in Milam Co. for a visit with Josephine's sister -- Mrs. Milton G. (Margaret) Antony. The Wm. P. Henry family soon moved to Milam Co., settling on land in the Bethlehem Community north of Rockdale.
Josephine died tragically in October of 1899, and William P. died in February of 1912. They are buried side-by-side in the Murray Cemetery north of Rockdale.

On the group photo above you can see dark marks both above and below the central images of Josephine & Wm. P. Perhaps these markings were placed there for the sake of the person who would create the following portrait of the married couple from the family photo. Could it be that this portrait was created following Josephine's tragic death as a special gift for the grieving widower and her surviving loved ones?
