Wm. P. Henry -- who ARE his parents?
« Thread Started on Feb 16, 2006, 5:20pm »

Rockdale, Texas. From recollections of her maternal grandfather handwritten by Miss Laura Hamilton (1898-1987), who was 13 years of age when Wm. P. Henry died in 1912.

William Pascal Henry was borned in Greensborough Kentucky Feb. 19. 1836.

At the age of 17 he ran away from home to join the Confederate Army. He served all during the war. He was in Hood's Brigade in Texas when the war was over. They had been camped along Old Caney. He never returned to his home in Kentucky. > Comments <

He had one brother Frank who lived in Kentucky and one sister who married a Owens and they lived in Paducah. She had two daughters Mertie and Ida. Mertie married a Bydee who was a barber and also a Postmaster at Lucien (we think). Ida married George Saxse. . . .

Based on Aunt Laura's* reminiscenses (above) as well as copies of pages from a > 19th century family Bible < we believe that our William Paschal Henry was born on the 19th day of February in 1836. [*Note: The lady I knew as Aunt Laura was actually my 1st cousin twice removed. Her mother and my maternal great-grandpa were siblings.]

While there has been NO information passed down to us about who the parents of William Paschal Henry were, Aunt Laura did say that he was born in Greensborough Kentucky. Based on her writings, we began by searching for him on the 1850 Kentucky census, where the following entry was found:

      17-19 August 1850
      Barren County, Kentucky
      2nd Division, p. 443, Census

There is a 14-year-old William P. Henry living in the household of a 48-year-old Paschal J. Kirtley.

Also in that household are other Kirtley family members by the names of Mary (41), Oliver (23), Perry (19), Martha (14), Louisa (12), Mary Ann (10), Paschal J. Jr. (7), Sally (5), and Casandria E. (2).

The census enumerator indicated that all of the household members were born in Kentucky.

 1835 Henry-Kirtley Marriage

While searching for a possible Kirtley-Henry connection, the following was found:

      4 March 1835
      Barren County, Kentucky

      Mary Kirtley married Thomas Henry.

This marriage took place less than a year before the assumed birthday of our William Paschal Henry on the 19th of February in 1836.

While looking for a link between this Mary Kirtley and the Paschal J. Kirtley that had a William P. Henry in his household in 1850, the following was found:

      20 November 1826
      Barren County, Kentucky

Paschal J. Kirtley is appointed guardian of his three younger sisters: Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, orphans of John, decd. Sarah under 14. Simeon Lewis on security bond.

It is assumed that this is the P. J. Kirtley that Wm. P. Henry is living with in 1850, and that this Mary Kirtley is the mother of Wm. P. Henry.

While unable to find a > Thomas Henry < in Kentucky on the 1840 or 1850 Census records, I DID find a > Mary Henry < listed as head-of-household living in Green County in 1850. Also listed are a son, > Francis Henry <, a 10-year-old male, and a daughter, 6-year-old > Ann Henry <.

If you visit the above page, you will also see that immediately next door to this Mary Henry is Bellfield Henry. It is believed that this > Bellfield Henry < is the father of the Thomas Henry who married Mary Kirtley -- and that they are the long-unidentified parents of our William Paschal Henry.
