On this date in our family history . . . the 7th day of April . . . in the year 1927 . . . Peter Brackett is laid to rest at Laural Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine . . . Peter is the adoptive father of Eva May Smith nee [Brackett] (1874-1936) . . . who is the mother of Elizabeth Marilla Henry nee Smith (1912-1932) . . . who is the maternal grandma of the Keeper of this website . . .

And as it turns out . . . besides being the father-in-law of Thomas Warren Alonzo Smith (1866-1920) . . . Peter is ALSO a 4th cousin 4 times removed to the said T. W. A. Smith . . . . who is the father of the above mentioned Elizabeth Marilla Henry nee Smith . . .

Peter & T. W. A. both descend from Anthony Brackett (c. 1613 - 1691) . . . also referred to as Anthony the Immigrant, he is a 3rd great-grandpa to Peter . . . as well as a 10th great-grandpa to the Keeper of this website . . .

    PETER BRACKETT ANSWERS HIS LAST CALL

    Civil War Veteran and Son of Revolutionary Soldier Died at His Daughter's Home.

    Peter Brackett, one of the few living sons of a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and one of the best known of the local Civil war veterans, died Monday night at his home, 45 Prospect street, following an extended illness. His condition had been critical for the past several days.

    Mr. Brackett was a familiar figure about the city until his recent illness, being very active for his age and daily visitor to the G.A.R. hall in city building, where he served as caretaker for some time, being one of the most active of the members. He attended the Three-Quarter Century club meeting at Augusta last year and was one of the most active in the gathering.

    He was well-known in the city and held in exceptionally high esteem by a large circle of friends to whom news of his death brought profound sorrow. For a number of years he had taken a very keen interest in the affairs of the G.A.R. posts in this city and in the state of Maine.

    He was an old-time member of the fire department, being connected with the Eben Simpson company of the department in the 70's.

    He was the youngest of a family of 14 children and his father, William Brackett, the Revolutionary soldier, was 85 years old when Peter was born, March 4, 1838.

    Not only was Peter Brackett's father a soldier in the Revolutionary war, but Peter himself served five years in the Civil war and was a leading member of the local Grand Army organization.

    He enlisted in Co. B of the Fifth Maine infantry in 1861 and after three months' service was discharged. He soon reenlisted in Co. B, First Maine Veterans, and served until the end of the war in 1865.

    Peter's father, William Brackett, the soldier of the Revolution, was a native of Portland, then Falmouth. When news of the battles of Lexington and Concord reached Falmouth, William, who was then 27 years old, went at once to the Portland recruiting station with hundreds of other loyal young men and volunteered his services.

    William joined Captain John Brackett's company which was part of the regiment commanded by Colonel Phinney.

    He marched with other Maine men to Boston, took part in the siege of Boston, and was with Washington at Long Island and Valley Forge. He was discharged December 25, 2779.

    Peter Brackett treasured as a valued possession his father's discharge papers and other relics showing his sire's connection with the War of Independence.

    It was not until 1892, however, that Peter took advantage of his rights by descent and actually joined the Sons of the American Revolution and received their certificate of membership.

    He was the last of his family.

    Mr. Brackett was one of the oldest members of Mavoshen lodge, Knights of Pythias, and was a past chancellor of the order. He was a past president of the Fifth Maine Regiment association and at the time of his death chaplain of Sheridan post, G.A.R. He was always greatly interested in Sheridan post and the Grand Army.

    He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Eva Smith, with whom he made his home, and several nephews and nieces.

    The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Hill Street Advent church. Friends are invited to attend.
