Robert E. Henry in the Navy
« Thread Started on Jun 8, 2007, 12:57am »

Don't have details yet, but the "rumor" is that my grandpa -- Robert E. Henry (1905-1976) -- enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Sherman, Texas. We DO know that he was on board the USS Sturtevant at Christmas time in 1927. . . and we assume that he was at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Virginia in February of 1927 . . .

That's the Union Jack flying over Robert's left shoulder. It only had 48 stars between 04 July 1912 and 03 July 1959.

Wikipedia says that, "Jacks are additional national flags flown by warships (and certain other ships) on a jackstaff at the bow of the ship. These are usually flown only when not underway and when the ship is dressed on special occasions."

 17 January 1931 Discharge?

I haven't seen Grandpa Henry's discharge papers yet, but Elizabeth (Grandma) made an entry in Uncle Bob's baby book that stated that he was discharged on 17 January 1931.

BUT . . . Aunt Peggy said he was still in the Navy when he met and/or married her sister, Anna. And on Bob & Anna's marriage license it states that his occupation was "Service Man" (Navy?). Did he re-up?
