Dear Aunt Amanda and Aunt Nancy --

I take my seat this morning to drop you a few lines of very ? sadness. About two weeks ago Della had a fine son was doing very well - so every body thought - ?

she taken cold on Friday night the 26th of Dec. or rather Saturday morning before day - I went after the Dr just before day and he came and never done her any good.

she gradually grew worse all the time and on the third of this month in the morning about three oclock she died.

she knew everybody and everything up to within an hour of the time of her death although she was talking out of her head for several days but whenever anyone would call her attention to anything she knew all about it -

she was buried last night at Prospect Church about five miles from here - The Dr. that waited on her first moved out of the county in a day or two so there was no chance to get him.

we got the only two Drs there was about here - they were very good Drs. so said to be - Drs Doak and Allen.

I got a letter from aunt Mandy the night before she died and Vicy read part of it to her but she did not seem to pay any attention to it - she recollected you very well but did not understand the letter.

she was so near gone and her mouth was so dry she did not talk but very little after that so that you could understand her. she didn't seem to care much for anyone but Bill.

Mat had a chill this morn - all the rest are well. I forgot to say - Aunt Judy and Uncle Thomas has taken the baby. Aunt Judy stayed here all the time Della was sick - both night and day -

I don't believe that I can think of anything else to write so I will close - give my love to all, yourselves included -

I remain as ever your affectionate nephew.

    Joseph H. Vick

    Jack Landers' Notes
    16 November 2001 - CJL

1)"[14A - BURK] (#?)" - This letter not in 'Amanda Boyd Letters & Vick
Family History - Marianna, Arkansas, May 1, 1999, Compiled by G. Wayne Vick, Laverne Adams Dixon And Bob Turner'. Received copy I have August 20, 2001 from Wayne Vick, which was apparently transcribed by his sister Ila Burk some years earlier.

2)"Dear Aunt Amanda and Aunt Nancy" - Amanda Sarah Boyd, b. 9 April 1833 in South Carolina, and her younger sister Nancy Younge [Boyd] Richey, b. 11 September 1839 in Mississippi to Mary [McDowell] and Andrew Boyd, Jr.

    3)"Della had a fine son..." - Adela [Vick] Marquis, b. 1854, Starkville,
Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to Mary Caroline [Boyd] and Little Berry Fletcher Vick, and her little son, Enoch Marquis, b. Abt. 22 December 1873.

    4) Della's death is covered very well in the October 2000 VICK FAMILY NEWSLETTER, so I won't repeat that here, except as follows.

5)"Della...taken cold...on the third of this month in the morning about
three oclock she died." - This was January 3, 1874.

6)"She was buried last night at Prospect Church about five miles from here." - Apparently she was buried the evening after her death, as the letter was dated 'Jan 4 1874'. When we visited the Prospect Cemetery in 1990, we located Della's husband William Jart Marquis' gravestone, but did not find Della's.

7)" ...aunt Mandy..." - This must be Amanda Sarah Boyd [See 2) above].

    8)"...Vicy..." - Lou Vicy Jane [Vick] Sikes, b. 3 September 1854 at
Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to Louisa Catherine [Boyd] and Hartwell D. Vick.

    9)"...Bill..." - William Jart Marquis, b. 31 January 1851, [parents and
    place of birth unknown], unless his father is the Jim Marquis mentioned in Vick Letters - See: #3, Note 10); #6, Note 3); #8, Note 7), 8), & 9); #9, Note 7); #27, Note 2); #11, Note 12); #13, Note 8); and #18, Note 15.

    10)"Mat..." - Matthew Vick, b. 1866, Starkville, Oktibbeha County,
Mississippi to Mary Caroline [Boyd] and Little Berry Fletcher Vick.

    11)"...Aunt Judy..." - Judith Ann [Ball/Bull], b. 16 May 1839 in Alabama
    [parents unknown].

12)"...Uncle Thomas..." - Joshua Thomas Vick, b. 5 June 1828, Nash County, North Carolina to Martha Caroline Walker and William [Captain Billy] Vick.

13)"Joseph H. Vick" - Della [Vick] Marquis's older brother, Joseph Henry Vick, b. 16 April 1852, Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to Mary Caroline [Boyd] and Little Berry Fletcher Vick.
