1822 Margaret Roberts 1892 Friday, February 22, 1822
Margaret Roberts was born February 22, 1822, daughter of Elisha Roberts. He was one of the first settlers of San Augustine around 1821. Margaret was the youngest child of the Roberts family, and the only one born in Texas. She was a sister to Mahala Lee Roberts, grandmother of Horace and Jim Hall. Margaret Roberts married Alex McDonald, who was born in Canada. She is listed in the Texas 1850 census as living in Trinity with her husband.
Mrs. McDonald was a very young lady when Sam Houston came to her father's inn in San Augustine, and she helped to nurse him back to health after the Battle of San Jacinto. For her kindness he gave her a candle mold, and this mold was given by a Mr. Summ(er)field Roberts* to the Texas State History Collection in Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. McDonald's father, Elisha Roberts, was one of the early Alcaldes of San Augustine. He was a large land owner, and he gave to Margaret a large amount of land in Trinity County, and to her sister Mahala he gave land in Houston County.
My father, Horace E. Hall, told the tale many times of riding the train to Trinity to see his aunt and uncle. His aunt and uncle had a large type of a hotel right by the railroad tracks in Trinity. If you slept there, you would always be awakened by an early train that would come by.
This information was submitted by Mrs. Esther M. (Hall) Biggers. A one-page photocopy (no source indicated) was sent to Vickie by Nancy Ryan, 9532 Dixie Lane, Dallas TX 75228, October 1998.

*NOTE: According to the "TSHA Handbook Online," Summerfield Griffith Roberts (1891-1970)...was the son of Matthew Cartwright and Emily (Griffith) Roberts of Terrell, Texas. . . . As a fifth-generation Texan interested in Texas history and culture, Roberts encouraged writing and research on the Republic of Texas by endowing the Summerfield G. Roberts prize for the best Texas history book through the Sons of the Republic of Texas. Emily Griffith Roberts was the compiler of the ANCESTRAL STUDY OF FOUR FAMILIES: ROBERTS, GRIFFITH, CARTWRIGHT, SIMPSON (2 vols., Dallas, 1939, 1948).]
