FYI . . . Lexington is now in Lee County, Texas . . .
Lexington Burleson Co Texas
February the 17th 1870
I take my seat to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope these few lines will find you enjoying the same good blessing I had ought to have written you before now but I have had so much to do that I have not had time . . .
Texas is . . . the place to make money. I have made about thirty dollars since Christmas and have not worked more than half the time
We had a good time on the road well we did get into one bad place called a marsh about a half mile wide and our mules got down in water and the water was about waist deep and every man had to get out and unhitch his mules and lead them out to the bank? and get a yoke of oxen to pull us out and we waded in and out of the water all day
Mr. Harrington was robbed of eleven hundred and fifty dollars the other day the robers have escaped
we have commenced plowing a little but today there is a norther this morning and we are doing nothing today
I want you to write to me how everything looks about there if it looks like it did when we left and how the negroes are a doing there are but few negroes here (there are but few negroes out here and how all the pretty girls are getting along there is not many pretty girls out here in Texas Miss Sus? Perry married the other day a man the name of Jomelia [Gomillion?] our old acquaintance are all living near
well I know you are getting tired so I must come to a close write soon as you get this . . .
your affectionate nephew
