[/s] [sic, i.e., Old Evergreen, also known as Evergreen, is between State highways 77 and 21 on Farm Road 1624, some 5½ miles north of Giddings in central Lee County. One of the earliest settlements in the county, the town was originally a stage stop on the Old San Antonio Road.]
5) ...Aunt Judy and the children...been having chills nearly all winter... - Must be Judith Ann [Ball/Bull], wife of Joshua Thomas Vick, and their children.
6) ...Charley had one...in bed now - Charles E. Vick, b. 11 October 1857 to Little Berry Fletcher and Mary Caroline [Boyd] Vick.
7) Papa...hired Jim Marquis again this year. - Hartwell D. Vick...Jim Marquis. Evidence appears to be mounting that this Jim [Marcus/Marquis] is related to and probably the father of William Jart Marquis, Joseph E. Marquis, and Richard Powell Marquis. Jim [Marcus/Marquis] is mentioned as working for/staying with Hartwell D. Vick in Letters: #3, #8, and #9 (this one).
8) ...store robbed in Lexington last Saturday night. - This would be Saturday, 11 February, 1871.
9) I...start to school next week...Uncle Berry is going to send Ella and Bell. Lou Vicy Jane Vick, b. 3 September 1854, Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to Hartwell D. and Louisa Catherine [Boyd] Vick; Ellen Louella LuVicy Vick, b. (Nov. 1858-Dec. 1859) and Arabella (Belle) Vick, b. 10 March 1862, both born Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, to Little Berry Fletcher and Mary Caroline [Boyd] Vick.
10) ...Della... Adella Vick, b. 1854, Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi - {older sister of Ellen and Arabella in (9 above}.
11) ...have not gardened yet...have no hens setting...old goose raised nine goslings last year... - Apparently not a lot was happening on the farm, as Vicy saw it.
12) ...Aunt Amanda... - Amanda Sarah Boyd.
13) ...finished my album quilt...about out of pieces...four quilts ready...no frames...about 25 quilts to quilt... - A lot of piecing going on during the cold months, apparently, but they apparently hadn't managed to get quilting frames up yet.
14) ...Aunt Caroline... - Mary Caroline [Boyd] Vick.
15) You and Aunt Nancy... - Amanda Sarah Boyd and Nancy Younge [Boyd] Richey.
16) ...don't think we will ever get done picking cotton...been so wet... - Apparently the wet weather has delayed cotton picking quite a bit, as it seems a little unusual to still be picking cotton in February. As I recall, we usually tried to get it done before Christmas.
17) ...my photograph... - Did 'Uncle Berry' and 'Uncle Thomas' take pictures of Vicy (and probably other members of the family) back to Mississippi with them?
18) ...I weigh 130 pounds. Lou Vicy Jane Vick was 17, to be 18 years old the coming September 3, 1871, and apparently a strong, healthy young lady.
19) The peach and plum tree are blooming - Trees blooming in February would be in serious peril of being frost-bit, even in south-central Texas.
20) ...preacher...from Gunton, Miss...Mr. Russel. - Is this Guntown, Lee County, Mississippi (Just north of Tupelo, Mississippi)? -- Mr. Russel???
21) Mrs. Perry is teaching at Mr. Perry's...about fifteen scholars. - Is this Arabella Belle [Vick] Perry, sister of Little Berry, Joshua Thomas and Hartwell D. Vick, and wife of Henderson W. Perry? Seems strange that Vicy wouldn't have called her Aunt Belle, if so! (Also see comment 5) on Letter #6, 10) on Letter #25. I wondered for a time if this might be Johnson Perry's wife, but Johnson moved to Caldwell County before letter #8 was written on 16 Jan 1871. (See Comment #12 and body of Letter #8.)
22) Aunt Nancy...Aunt Amanda... - Nancy Younge [Boyd] Richey and Amanda Sarah Boyd.
23) L. J. Vick - Lou Vicy Jane Vick {See 9) above}. [/ul] [/size][/quote]
